Chapter Ten – Revolt (Jadikira)

Until the day he was summoned to the temple's reception hall, Jadikira thought that the Great Lady Aenea had lost interest in tormenting her former philtatos.

After Eidyia's death and the theft of his free will, she had summoned him to the Chamber of Pleasures and Punishments one last time, and tested the limits of her control over him.

"I forbid you to make a sound," Aenea commanded, then placed her hand on his head.

Jadikira thought that his head might explode with the white-hot pressure of pain surging through him. But her command over his will held fast, and he found his throat paralyzed, unable to produce even the slightest whimper.

When she finally released him, he fell to his knees and collapsed into the cool mosaic floor, breathing in ragged gasps as waves of agony moved through him like a sea-tide, rising and falling and only gradually retreating.

She departed in a cool rustle of long robes. Eventually, two of the temple guards dragged him back to his cell.

Jadikira lay in the straw bedding for a long time, curled into a tight ball, his breathing still disordered, hot tears of rage and pain stinging his face.

A guard came to the cell the next morning. Jadikira's heart began to pound like the beats of a war-drum as he heard the heavy click of the lock.

But instead of a summons to the Chamber of Pleasures and Punishment, he found himself being lowered into the temple's sewer tunnels with orders to find and clear whatever was currently blocking the drains in the baths.

It was nasty, smelly, unpleasant work for one who had been born into the royal lineage of Kreta, but it was still a thousand times better than being in the presence of the Great Lady Aenea as she exercised her cruel whims.

He slept like the dead that night, sore and aching in every muscle but calmer in spirit.

The next day, he was roused just after dawn, and set to scrubbing the temple's latrines with hot water and vinegar. In the afternoon, he was sent to the head gardener, and ordered to pull weeds in the herb garden.

And so it went for weeks as the days grew steadily shorter and the arrival of cold rain and icy winds heralded the beginning of winter.

Jadikira was still confined to the temple grounds, his days settling into a routine of menial physical labor. But, gradually, his heart stopped pounding with terror whenever the guard unlocked his cell in the morning, though he hated the dull, gray apathy that gradually replaced it.

Aenea had broken him, and then she had apparently lost interest in him. Somehow, her indifference hurt him worse than her active malice.

Word came of the imminent arrival of a Child of Lilith and his servants from Anatolia, and of a marriage being arranged for the young lord. Jadikira knew he ought to feel outrage on Psyche's behalf. But he merely felt numb when he heard the news.

These days, he found no longer had any motivation except to obey the orders given him.
